How to read the Bible

1. Pick a good translation.

Since the Bible was not originally written in English, there are many Bible versions to choose from. Some aim for a literal word-for-word translation of the original text, while others aim for a thought-for-thought translation. We use the New International Version (NIV) at NorthCross because it is in the middle of these two extremes.

2. Choose a time, place, and plan.

Since the goal is to make this a long-term habit, think about a consistent time and place that would work well for reading the Bible. Once you decide on your routine, pick a reading plan that you can follow along with. The YouVersion Bible app has countless plans to choose from.

3. Prepare your heart.

An unprepared heart and mind will be easily distracted by all the things going on in your life. Each day before you read, take a moment to clear your mind. Think about God’s presence and his purpose for your life, knowing that he loves and cares for you in Jesus.

4. Know the context.

The Bible is a collection of books that were written by different authors to different people. Each one has a unique purpose. Before reading whatever section is planned for the day, know who wrote it, to whom it was written, and the purpose for which it was written. This will help you understand it better. The Bible Project has helpful videos to help with context for each book of the Bible.

5. Read and apply.

A simple method for reading the Bible is the SOAP method. As you read, pick a Scripture verse that stands out. Write down some Observations regarding this verse. Consider what it would look like to Apply the verse to your life. Finally, Pray that God would direct you to Jesus for forgiveness and hope.
